• 3.0 out of 5 stars from johnverp -- Good, without being sensational : This is my third Gray novel and I've enjoyed them all. There is a lot to like about this one too: a number of threads, an intriguing plot, our protagonist, other characters, including a fresh face, and pace which keeps the reader engaged throughout. Some unlikely plot elements crept in too, however, and that took some of the shine off for me. For example, it is hard to imagine terrorist recruitment being as sloppy as implied and I couldn't readily come to terms with the identity and actions of our culprit. 7/10 ( Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ruth Matheson -- Another great addition to the Lorimer series. : I have to say that I have read all of the Lorimer books and am a huge fan. Like any book series, some are better than others however that being said I found this story one of the best. Alex very sympathetically deals with the growing numbers of refugees in the city of Glasgow and how they are being dealt with and their inherent mistrust of people in authority mainly due what is happening in their own countries. Add to that the problem of money laundering and what it is associated with and you have a good story. Alex' great story telling and narrative easily take you on a journey from Glasgow city centre to a tower block in a deprived area of the city to one of the most expensive housing estates in Scotland and all in the blink of an eye! Recommended by a friend in Canada who has a family member back in Scotland who is a good friend of the author, I am totally enthralled by every book of hers I've read. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Malcolm R -- Facile and almost superficial : Not a lot happens in the first two thirds of this book though none of them have been action packed. We are introduced to a Zimbabwean refugee who witnesses the end of a crime, after some bumbling around he meets Lorimer who has been doing some bumbling of his own with regard to two murders and the search for a leak within the force and a potential terrorist. The social part of the stories have been very good and now, as Lorimer ages, he is thinking of retirement though once again his wife is attacked and a stray, the Zimbabwean, is taken under his wing. The real problem with the story is the ease with which the terrorist cell is discovered and the problem solved with no explanation of any of the deaths or motivation for the plot. The main characters and a few new ones are believable and the reader can't help but become engaged in their lives. The crime story is also interesting and engaging.
